Being Grateful: Forty-Ninth Edition

Hey everyone! I’m back with our weekly post featuring the things I’ve been grateful for this week. I hope you’re ready to join in, as there’s a lot!

Being Grateful | Journey to Saving

Our engagement

Obviously, I have to list this one first. =) If you missed my announcement on Monday, R decided to propose this past Sunday as we were hiking in the mountains surrounding Asheville. It goes without saying that I am being grateful he finally popped the question!

No, I’m only kidding (or am I?). Apparently he had been trying to think of ways to propose since August or so, but he couldn’t settle on a good one. He was afraid of disappointing me. I felt bad after hearing that!

I have to be honest and say I wasn’t completely surprised for a few reasons – one being that we’ve been talking about marriage for the past year, and two, I figured the day trip would be a good opportunity for it. It only crossed my mind for a second, though, and as the day wore on, I didn’t think it was going to happen!

Family & friends

I was overwhelmed at the outpouring of support we received upon announcing the news via Facebook (of course, so classy). We Being Grateful 49 | Journey to Savingtold my parents first, and then let the cat out of the bag (even though she’s in a bag here).

It made me so happy to see others happy for our happiness (woo), and I loved reading all of the comments on Monday’s post!

I have to admit, though, it is times like these where I really miss everyone back home. I know if we were still there, we would probably be going over my grandma’s house this weekend, having dinner with everyone. We probably would have went out to celebrate with our friends, and we might be making plans for an engagement party.

Instead, we’re here just celebrating with ourselves, no plans for parties except a pity party joking, joking. We’re visiting my parents this weekend!

Our trip

I’m also really grateful that we decided to take the day trip. At the beginning of the month, I wasn’t sure if our budget would really allow for it, but we ended up spending next to nothing (except for gas), and we had a great time.

R used to run in the mountains back when he was on the cross country team in college, and he got a little nostalgic being “back in nature.” It was refreshing, and both of us would really like to travel to more state parks in the area.

Being Grateful 49 | Journey to SavingMy parents were not the outdoorsy type, so growing up, I didn’t get to experience the joys of hiking, or even parks. Now that the weather has finally gotten cooler, I think we’ll take advantage of the fact we’re only an hour or two away from some fantastic places.

My mom has a job!

You might recall that I posted last week about my mom’s interview. It turns out, she got the job! So she is officially out of retirement and back to being busy. Her first day was yesterday and she really enjoyed it. Her coworkers are all very nice and pleasant, and apparently really enjoy baking, as their break room was filled with sweets. Thank goodness I don’t work there!

My plan for this visit is to get them set on a budget, which they both agreed to! I’m definitely not forcing anything on them. I’m grateful they’re willing to listen to my advice, because the income my mom will be bringing in can all go toward debt.

We’re basically going to be formulating a debt payoff plan for them, as well as figuring out where their spending leaks are. My mom was too funny, saying she doesn’t spend on anything outside of groceries (not true based on daily talks I have with her!). They don’t track their spending as they only use cash, so I’m going to try to get them into the habit of doing that.

Instagram challenge

I don’t know if any of you have heard of Create As Folk, but for the month of November, Laura (the founder) is hosting an Instagram challenge called #thedailybon. It’s focused on being grateful, so I thought it would be perfect for me to join in! If you’d like to join as well, or follow along, then add me on instagram – @journeytosaving.

I’m looking forward to being reminded on a daily basis to seek gratitude in the small things. While I write these weekly posts, it’s often after a whirlwind of a week, and I could do better in enjoying the present moment.

What are you being grateful for this week? Have you enjoyed nature lately?

Great to hear that you’ll be helping your parents with a budget. I keep telling my mom I want to take a look at her spending because I know I’ll be able to help her make some better decisions. She’s semi agreed to the idea. I’m going to keep chipping at it until I get a full yes.

Whew, it took about two hours of going through everything, but hopefully it will work out! I know my mom didn’t think they were spending as much as they actually were, so tracking the spending is going to be the first priority.

At the very least, maybe invite your mom to read your blog, or point her to other helpful posts? I hope she comes around to the idea!

Oh my gosh, your cat is so cute! I know that every time you post cat pictures, but seriously. Also – wow! I love your Asheville pictures. I feel like I live in a place that’s not so picturesque, although I’d really like to. So I’m vicariously living through your pictures :) I hope you guys get to get out in nature more before it gets too cold – although going for walks in the snow is pretty fun too! Have a great weekend :)

Thanks! She can be feisty (aka, a pain), but it’s hard to stay mad at her when she has such a cute face.

In the immediate area of where we live, it’s not that pretty, so it’s nice to be able to drive a few hours away to experience the beauty nature has to offer! I really need to get around to editing all of the pictures I took and uploading them somewhere to share with everyone.

I hope you’re enjoying your weekend!

Congrats on your mom getting the new job! I’m now back home from my two week trip to Montreal and as always I am so grateful to have spent time in my mom’s presence. She’s such a blessing to me and I know she was really happy to have me around. Also I have the best friends in the world! Have a good week-end Erin :)

Glad you’re back home with a better internet connection. ;) Your mom sounds very sweet. I am grateful I’m close enough to my parents to visit them for the weekend, but it’s so hard to be apart from the rest of our family and friends!

Congrats again on your engagement!!!! yay! Our engagement was kind of similar–I kept wondering when Mr. FW would finally pop the question! We were on a little vacation as well and I was SURE he was going to propose and he did! For me, it was good not to be caught too off guard. I’m really looking forward to hearing more about your wedding plans!

Thanks! I remember you telling your proposal story in my last post – so sweet! We’ve been talking about marriage for about a year now, but more seriously as of late, so it was only a matter of time. =)

Congrats to your mom on her job!!! My mom has been unemployed for almost a year now, and I would love it if she could find something. Unfortunately, I think she is taking the time to try to find herself rather than a job, but hopefully this is just a stage. Congrats again on your engagement!! I am SO excited for the two of you! I am thankful that this week is one of the least crazy I have had in a long time, so I am hopeful I will catch up with stuff and ease some of the stress in my life.

I can relate to that a little bit, as it took me a month or so to “pick myself up” after we moved earlier this year. It’s taken my mom almost a year to find a job, but she was also looking for office jobs. She gave up on that and turned to retail. Not what everyone dreams of doing in “retirement,” so I hope it works out for her, and I hope your mom gets back in the search!

Thanks again! I am hoping the same, at least for later in the week. I feel like we’ve been energizer bunnies lately. =)

It is. I can’t imagine being older and still saddled with so much debt. It’s got to be hard to find the motivation to pay it off, so I’m glad they have.

Have you ever wondered where the tradition came from that the guy proposes to the girl? It’s just so weird. It’s like they get to be the decider, they get to pick the timing, they get the upper hand, when clearly they are ridiculously lucky to get us. We’re the prize! Can I hear an AMEN, Sisters? … Okay, it’s late, I’ve taken a lot of cold medicine and I’m feeling silly. What am I grateful for this week? I am grateful for your happiness, Erin! For real, congratulations again! Remember, you ARE the prize! :D

Glad your parents are allowing you to help them with their budget and good to hear your mom got the job. I know a lot of times parents don’t really take kindly to financial advice from their kids since they feel like they know better. I’m sure you’ll have them out of debt in no time.

I hope so! Our meeting was interesting, but lighthearted. They’ve been carrying some form of debt around for a while now, and they could easily decide to live with it for the rest of their lives, so I’m proud of them.

Congrats again on your engagement!! I know what you mean about not being able to celebrate with family :( My little girl turned 1 last month and we were all alone, whereas normally my parents and brother and sister would have been there. That’s OK though! We will definitely enjoy all of our visits!

Congrats to your mom getting a job, too! And to them allowing you to help with the budget!! That’s wonderful news – wishing all of you the best!!

Thanks! Aw, my cousin’s daughter turned 1 last month as well, and I was really upset that I couldn’t be there. I’m thankful I can go and visit at any time, but my fiancé doesn’t have too many vacation days, so we’re not sure when he’ll be able to go back.
