Being Grateful - 66th EditionWhew, try saying “sixty-sixth” 10 times fast!

This week went by so fast, and we pretty much have one week left in May. Earlier this week, my mom and I were talking about how the holidays will be here before we know it. Yikes.

We’re not going to dwell on that, though. The weather is too nice to think past summer.

This weekend we’re headed to my parents, although I’m a bit apprehensive. Besides being a holiday weekend, there’s also a big event being hosted in the area that was associated with some violent events last year. The news is already reporting on similar activity.

I’m just hoping we have a safe and not-so-traffic filled weekend, and I’ll be wishing the same for all of you!

What I’m Being Grateful For This Week

Well, it’s official – I’ve been blogging for 2 years now. That went by rather quickly!

I still remember setting my blog up back when I was living with my parents. I spent the entire weekend making sure everything looked perfect, and I was so nervous to put myself out there, even though I was anonymous.

Yep, it was only last year I “came out of the blogging closet” after deciding to focus on writing full-time. I used to just be “E.M.” So weird! (And for the record, I can’t say whether being anonymous or not really had a huge effect on things.)

I know I say it often, but I’m grateful for the support you all have shown over the last two years. Some bloggers have come and gone, but many of you still remain, and I’m grateful to have you as part of my journey here.

I’m also grateful for some fun I had with a friend yesterday. We were playing a video game and sharing amusing commentary while we were trying to make sure our team won. What I’m really grateful for is the fact he’s a much better player than I am. Takes some of the pressure off.

R and I completely forgot Memorial Day was this weekend, so we were pleasantly surprised to find out he had a three-day weekend. While it is a day of remembrance, I hope those of you who also have the day off get to enjoy it.

Lastly, I’m grateful for my crazy cat who poses ridiculously so I can take pictures of her and share them with you.

Writing Around the Web

6 Simple Things to Enjoy In Life: My post on Frugal Rules this week actually goes along quite well with being grateful, as it’s focused on enjoying the simple things in life. Just as we often don’t stop to think about the things we should be thankful for, we don’t spend a lot of time slowing down and focusing on the little joys in life. I know it sounds a little lame, but think about the usual things you do during your day. What’s better than that freshly brewed cup of coffee? Getting to sleep in, or take a nap? Or cuddling with your pet?

5 Financial Quotes to Live By: I featured 5 fantastic financial quotes on YAM this week, which many of you seemed to relate to. I don’t know about you guys, but I love a good quote. Even though I love writing, I’m not always eloquent enough to come up with something so fitting, and I’m glad there are thousands of quotes out there to reference. What’s your favorite quote?

7 Awesome Benefits of Traveling: I’m talking about traveling on Wherewithal this week. I’ve been mentioning it more and more as traveling is slowly becoming a goal of mine. Truthfully, I never thought I could afford traveling because growing up, it was out of the question. Any time we took a vacation somewhere, we drove. I didn’t get on a plane until I was 16. However, I’m seeing the possibilities now, and they’re pretty exciting. I wrote this as someone who hasn’t had the experience of traveling, but these are the benefits I’m looking forward to.

Posts I’m Grateful For

Why I’m Grateful for Morning Sickness: I have to start with this one from the Frugalwoods. I know they got a mention last week, but this fits so well with our theme of being grateful. I’m so elated for them as they’re expecting a baby girl this fall! However, the journey wasn’t easy for them, and Mrs. FW beautifully describes why she’s grateful for all the “downsides” of pregnancy because of what they had to go through to get there. I absolutely love the attitude she has here and her perspective.

Putting the Rat Race on Pause: Tonya and I seem to be on the same wavelength this week as her post harkens back to enjoying the simple things in life. I can identify all too well with working myself too much and not enjoying things as much as I should. This is a good reminder to do that!

How to Find Well-Paying Freelance Gigs By Avoiding Job Boards: Kayla’s post on Careful Cents is for those of you who want to break into side hustling, but aren’t sure how to go about it. I agree with all the advice Kayla’s offering here, and I’ve stayed away from job boards as well. Your network is worth a lot more!

What are you being grateful for this week? Have any plans for this weekend?

  1. Tonya@Budget and the Beach May 23, 2015 at 7:47 AM

LOL I just read your post and we definitely were on the same wavelength! Hope everything goes OK this weekend and there are no crazy incidents. I tend to stay close to home on holiday weekends, mainly because I hate holiday traffic. I’m grateful for a very last minute freelance photographer job I got today for a lot of money. I had no idea I was even a freelance photographer! I guess I am now! I’m getting more jobs for things I barely know how to do than I am in a field where I’m an expert. Go figure! :)

    1. Erin M. May 23, 2015 at 9:34 AM

Love it! That’s happened to me before, too – the “oddest” services I offer get a lot of attention. Life seems to work like that, doesn’t it? I’m sure you make a good photographer though, might as well own it!

I normally don’t bother traveling during holiday weekends, either, but sadly my mom’s work schedule has been erratic and this is one of the few times we can visit when she’s not working during the day.

  2. Mrs. Frugalwoods May 23, 2015 at 9:20 AM

Thank you so much for mentioning my pregnancy post :). I am so tremendously grateful to be expecting and the process really has taught me a lot of having gratitude and patience in life.

Congrats to you on two years of blogging–that’s awesome! I hope you have a wonderful long weekend with your family!
P.S. Your cat is hilarious–her poses are cracking me up!

    1. Erin M. May 23, 2015 at 9:32 AM

So happy for you both! Gratitude and patience definitely go a long way, though I’m still working on the patience part. =)

Thanks! Haha, she’s not on par with Frugalhound yet, but maybe someday…the problem is she usually moves before I can take a picture. I was surprised she stayed there for this one.

  3. Chela @SmashOdyssey May 23, 2015 at 5:38 PM

Michael´s aunt surprised us with an all expenses paid weekend at a beautiful hotel in downtown Houston for the weekend. It´s been wonderful to do some work, lay by the pool, and play video games in bed with my hubby. Without having to go out of town, we definitely feel like we´re vacationing!

    1. Erin M. May 24, 2015 at 12:58 AM

That’s awesome and so sweet of her! Glad you’re enjoying it. Playing video games in bed totally sounds like my ideal weekend, haha.

  4. Jayson @ Monster Piggy Bank May 23, 2015 at 10:00 PM

I am glad that you took the chance two years ago to do blogging Erin because I know you have inspired someone to do it too and helped so many people with their savings. Happy weekend!

    1. Erin M. May 24, 2015 at 12:59 AM

Thanks Jayson! I’m always humbled to hear I’ve been an inspiration to someone. That makes blogging and writing all the more worth it. Enjoy your weekend!

  5. Tre May 24, 2015 at 7:58 AM

Hopefully the traffic won’t be too bad for you. We are sticking close to home this weekend. I don’t have patience for the traffic heading to the beaches.

    1. Erin M. May 24, 2015 at 9:40 AM

Beach areas are always awful! Very grateful we didn’t really hit much traffic coming down – the traffic actually started right after we made the turn down my parents’ road. Hope you enjoy your weekend!

  6. Alexis May 24, 2015 at 9:42 AM

Congrats on 2 years of blogging! Hope you have a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend. I don’t have any plans set in stone, but I’m hoping to relax and get caught up on things in general this weekend.

    1. Erin M. May 24, 2015 at 10:41 PM

Thanks! I hope you get to relax – getting caught up on things is always nice.

  7. Natalie @ Financegirl May 25, 2015 at 8:11 AM

I like how you forgot the holiday ;) I have to say I’ve been counting down to this three-day weekend and wishing every Monday was a catchup-blogging day!

    1. Erin M. May 25, 2015 at 9:28 AM

Definite side effect of being self-employed…I lose track of the days very easily (though I keep on top of the actual dates for deadlines!). Holidays are always nice for catching up with blogging, though! Hope you enjoy it.

  8. DC @ Young Adult Money May 25, 2015 at 11:22 AM

Congrats on 2 years of blogging! That’s an accomplishment you should be proud of. I can’t believe YAM will turn 3 on July 1st…the past three years have flown by. Thanks for linking to your post on YAM, and for always putting together such great posts. Funny pic of your cat, looks like a Maine Coon and tabby mix? I hope you guys have a fun and relaxing Memorial Day weekend!

    1. Erin M. May 27, 2015 at 12:33 PM

Thanks! It really feels like just yesterday that I got involved in the world of blogging. 3 years is crazy! Maybe blogging makes time go by faster as it seems like we’re all in disbelief, haha.

I’m not sure exactly what she is – sadly, she was part of a litter that got dumped outside of the shelter I used to work at. I just know she’s crazy. =) Hope you had a great weekend as well!

  9. Shannon @ Financially Blonde May 25, 2015 at 2:44 PM

Congrats on blogging for two years!!! It’s amazing how time flies and it feels like yesterday since you went from EM to Erin. I am grateful for family this weekend since I got to spend time with my brother and his family in Boston and today we are hanging out as a family, going to our neighborhood pool and grilling out. I hope you enjoyed your weekend!!

    1. Erin M. May 27, 2015 at 12:30 PM

Thanks! It really does feel like just yesterday that I wrote that post. That sounds like such a fun time, I hope you all had a good time!

  10. Amanda @ My Life, I Guess May 25, 2015 at 6:43 PM

Wow, has it really already been a year since you debuted as you? I remember I was thinking a lot about coming out of my semi-anonymous closet back then, too. I still haven’t decided what to do – haha! Good to know that it wasn’t that big of deal :)

    1. Erin M. May 27, 2015 at 12:29 PM

I can’t even believe how fast time has passed! It wasn’t a big deal at all – having a picture helps build trust anyway. =)

  11. Kirsten May 26, 2015 at 5:25 AM

I’m so glad you are a blogger! Congrats on two years and here’s hoping for many more.

    1. Erin M. May 27, 2015 at 12:28 PM

Thanks Kirsten! Writing has always been a big part of my life, so I imagine I’ll be around in some shape or form for a while longer. =)

  12. Chonce May 26, 2015 at 12:53 PM

Congrats on your blog’s 2-year anniversary! And your cat is so cute by the way :) I’m grateful for having a day off from work yesterday and getting the chance to work ahead on some home projects.

    1. Erin M. May 27, 2015 at 12:27 PM

Thank you! She is pretty adorable. Seems like a lot of people took advantage of the holiday to get caught up! We’re such a productive bunch. =)

  13. Kayla @ Shoeaholicnomore May 26, 2015 at 4:57 PM

Hey! Thanks for mentioning my Careful Cents post :) I hope you had a great weekend!!

    1. Erin M. May 27, 2015 at 12:27 PM

No problem! I hope you did as well!

  14. Tony @ Inequality Today May 27, 2015 at 7:31 AM

I’m grateful for the strong and healthy body I was born with. I have a friend who’s kid is always sick, and when I see kids like him I always think about how lucky most of us really are to have healthy bodies.

    1. Erin M. May 27, 2015 at 12:27 PM

Thanks for stopping by, Tony. I agree – we often take being healthy and functioning for granted. When I had surgery a few years ago, that struck me pretty hard, as I had difficulty just turning over to sleep, or getting up to walk. Such basic things, but they caused a ton of pain at the time.

  15. Done by Forty May 27, 2015 at 11:49 AM

Hilarious cat there. What a ham.

Always love the reminders to feel grateful. It’s a lesson I keep learning.

    1. Erin M. May 27, 2015 at 12:25 PM

She is a total ham. And also very clueless, which typically leads to hilarity of some sort. Glad to be continuing with the reminders!

  16. Melanie @ Dear Debt June 2, 2015 at 1:12 PM

Wow 2 years already?! Time is flying. You have done amazing things girl. So happy and proud of you!

    1. Erin M. June 4, 2015 at 4:09 PM

Thank you, and right back at ya!
