Being Grateful: Thirty-Second Edition

Another week gone, and next week will see the start of July, which also happens to be my birthday month. I’m sure we’ll all be saying, “Where did June go?!” next week, so I’ll spare you!

I’m actually pretty excited, mostly because July is going to be crazy busy for me with family. My mom and I leave for NY on the 10th, get back on the 15th, and then I’ll be staying with them the rest of the week until we come back up here. My grandma is departing from our airport on the 23rd. I’m positive I’ll be saying, “Where the heck did July go?” soon.

That is definitely something I’m being grateful for, also because the faster summer passes by, the more I can look forward to reasonable temperatures and no humidity! Summer has always been my least favorite season, and I haven’t quite gotten over the fact that we skipped Spring when we moved. I mean, a few days after and it was snowing back home, meanwhile we were enjoying 60 degree weather. Crazy!

being grateful

This week was pretty laid back, so I don’t have much to say. I have to apologize for the lack of posting, but I just haven’t had the motivation lately. I figure it’s okay to cut back during summertime, as people go on vacation and have other commitments. I’ll be posting at least once a week besides these posts, mostly whenever I feel like it!

Speaking of vacation, my aunt and uncle greatly enjoyed their time with my parents. I was sad we were only able to really spend a day and a half with them, but at least I’ll see them again soon! As to whether or not they’ll be following my parents and moving, we’ll have to wait and see.

From what my mom was telling me, my aunt and uncle might buy a house here and rent it out half the year, effectively becoming snowbirds. The issue is my cousins are still in NY, and they visit them frequently, so it’s tough. My aunt was trying to convince one of them to move here, too, but I’m doubtful!

You guys will all get a laugh out of this, but for some reason, Super Walmart is incomprehensible to people back home (we didn’t have any “super” ones). So when we went shopping there, my aunt and uncle were amazed at all it had to offer. My uncle was getting lost in the aisles, transfixed by who knows what!

They also visited the beach, my uncle went fishing and golfing, and they took the paddle boats around. On Thursday, they left to visit Charleston, which I would actually like to do at some point. They’ll be heading back home in the wee hours of the morning on Saturday.

Of course, as you all know, R got a speeding ticket on the way home from all of that, and we were very grateful the officer reduced the ticket. It sucks to have a clean record tarnished, but R says he knew it would happen eventually, so he wasn’t too bothered. I’m not a fan of that mindset, so I’ll still be doing what I can to keep my record clean =).

being gratefulI’m also grateful we’ve been surviving on what we’ve had in the apartment this week. Because of the ticket, I really didn’t want to add more to our monthly expenses in the form of food shopping, but I’m afraid we’re not going to last the rest of the month. I do have to report that there have been two cases of leftovers between last week and this week, which was a surprise. I have mentioned that R has two stomachs, so there usually aren’t any leftovers.

For those that have been following these posts the past few weeks, you’ll be happy to know my grandma was up to her usual shenanigans at Atlantic City this past weekend. I’m taking that as a good sign!

Lastly, a silly one – R has been hankering for a new video game for some reason, even though he hasn’t finished the current one he’s playing, so we went out to get it. He decided on Skyrim, which seems pretty gruesome so far. I’ve never played any of the Elder Scrolls games, but I’m not sure it’s my cup of tea.

I opted to try a Final Fantasy game (inspired by Alexis), as R is a huge fan and I’ve never played any of them. I’m a Zelda girl =). In any case, I figured it would be fun to play through it together, rather than watch R needlessly slaughter things or steal cars and crash them (via Grand Theft Auto).

And don’t worry – both of the games are older, and we got them preowned, so they were less than $20 each. I think paying $60 for a brand new game is slightly ridiculous (unless it’s as a gift), so it’s a good thing R and I have been behind!

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Anyone excited for 4th of July next week? Do you have plans to visit family or take a vacation this summer? Have you played any video games lately?

I have no idea where June went either!! We are now more than halfway through the year which is just crazy to me. And I am a Zelda girl too! We recently downloaded the original onto our Wii and the three of us all play it together. I work the controller because I am the best at it, my hubby watches the map and my son watches youtube videos to try to find clues. It’s fun. Anywho, I hope you have a wonderful weekend and the humidity isn’t too bad, I am not a big summer fan either.

Seriously! It will be holiday season before we know it. Yikes!

That sounds like SO much fun! Before me, my mom and dad would play together, with her looking up cheats and my dad playing. It can easily be entertainment for the whole family, and it’s cheap! Sadly, my dad isn’t a huge fan of console games now, but at least I have R.

I am hoping the weather up there will somehow hold out for me, but it’s actually warmer in my hometown than it is here right now! Ah well. I hope you’re enjoying your weekend!

I didn’t feel like going food shopping today like I usually do, so I decided to eat what was in the freezer. That’s when my brother came in offering me curried lamb and rice. Lucky me!

Enjoy NY with your mum, I hope you have a great time. I haven’t been away with my mum for a while now.

Nice! I never feel like going food shopping really, it’s such a hassle sometimes.

Thanks! I haven’t been on an actual vacation with my parents in forever; we’re trying to plan something for later this year or next year, if I can get enough travel rewards together.

I used to work for a video game company and never played video games even then! I did like guitar hero though and my friend has just dance which is so much fun. Plans for the 4th? I try to avoid the beach that one day. It turns into a total shit show. I’m just laying low these days! :) So excited for you to be spending so much time with family this summer. I know that’s important to you!

Oh yeah, guitar hero and just dance with friends is always fun. I can imagine that the beach gets a little crazy on the 4th! I might just drive down the highway that borders the beach and watch the fireworks from there.

Yes, this will pretty much be my only chance to see my whole family for the rest of the year. The tickets are too expensive to visit for the holidays, and my parents and I really don’t want to do the drive again!

Thanks! It’s really not worth getting that mark on your record. I used to think the same about school and getting bad grades, it’s pretty applicable.

This weekend is the long weekend in Canada. Well, July 1st is Tuesday but loads of people are taking off Monday to make a 4-day weekend. I’m going to hang out with my Mom because my Dad is going fishing. Hopefully no tickets on the 5 hours each way.

I hope you’re enjoying it! I have my fingers crossed for you =). I’m always *extra* careful around the holidays, considering cops are probably trying to catch drunk drivers and whatnot.

I’m trying really hard to “get ahead” before the 4th so that I can enjoy the long weekend. We’ll see how that works…especially with three of my four nights next week already spoken for.

The only video game I really play is Madden, and I only buy it every few years. I haven’t played my current one in over a year. There really just isn’t time :/

Oh no! Good luck in getting ahead at least. We normally don’t have much time, either, but we’ve slowly been making adjustments. R works 11 hours a day, so when he comes home he just wants to relax, and video games are generally cheap entertainment. While I work on blog stuff, he’s shooting stuff =).

I am really excited for 4th of July. We don’t have any big plans. I am guessing we will probably grill out and watch fireworks. I would love to splurge and get some shrimp and scallops. Have been craving seafood like crazy. I also checked the weather and it looks like it is supposed to be 80 and sunny. Should be beautiful! Have a great weekend E.M. : )

We don’t normally have any big plans, either, but my parents community loves to celebrate certain events. They have a big lake in there, and the fireworks are supposed to be right over it, so it should be nice. 80 degrees, I wish!! It’s been around 90 here. I hope you have a great weekend, too!

I’m pretty amazed by how quickly June went by myself. I’m looking forward to a couple of activities in my neighborhood next week – the annual 3rd of July block party and Nashville’s Hot Chicken Festival on the 4th! I heard one of the local bike shops is having a sale next week, so I may wander over and peruse some of their used bikes. I really need something better for longer rides (like my commute to work!)

That sounds like a lot of fun! I’ve actually only ever been to one block party my whole life (I lived on a main road back home) for the 4th, and I remember it being enjoyable. I hope you find something for a decent price! I should look and see if our local shop has anything on sale…I’m getting jealous of seeing all these bike posts from others, and I’ve been wanting one for the last two years!

I’m glad you’re giving Final Fantasy a try! I wasn’t the biggest fan of FFXIII, but some people really like it. Skyrim is a great game, you’ll lose hours playing it :) I’ve been playing Final Fantasy IV: The After Years on my PSP, amazing game so far. I agree with you that $60 for a new game is way too much money. I don’t even like having to pay $30 for a new handheld game, but its a bit better since I know I’ll get my moneys worth from it.

R isn’t a big fan of it either – as he says, it’s a very linear path, and he’s one to go out and explore everything and basically get sidetracked from the main mission =). It was the only one in the store, though, so I figured I might as well! We’ll probably alternate playing the two, so it might take a while to progress.

There are definitely some games that are more involved and detailed that might be worth the higher price tag. We just don’t play video games as much anymore, so we don’t jump all over new releases or anything. R would love to play Dark Souls 2, but I told him he has to wait for his birthday!

That’s so funny that you’ll arrive in NY on July 10th and I’m booked to fly to Montreal on that same day! Without a doubt you’ll have a good time in NYC with your mom!

I’m pretty excited about the long weekend…we should have more holidays in the summer. Also having my son’s first birthday July 4th weekend…parties are nice but stressful prepping and planning. We’re having it in the park so hopefully the weather will be nice!

Haha, more holidays in the summer sounds like something everyone could agree on. People are taking vacations left and right, might as well. The park seems like a nice place to celebrate his first birthday. I can’t believe he’s a year old already!!

I’m not planning on doing any travelling this summer and I have no big plans for the 4th. I’m hoping to spend only a few dollars on a few fireworks and enjoy some of the long weekend with my family. I’d like to get a bit of relaxing in sometime too!

I wouldn’t mind getting some little sparklers! It’s funny to see fireworks being sold around here, as they were illegal back in NY (not that people didn’t smuggle them in). I hope you get to relax!

Great things to look forward to! I think my problem is it seemed to take forever to reach the “official” start of summer, meanwhile it has felt like summer for a month weather-wise.

    EM,

Good find on getting those older games to fulfill your gaming habit. If you’re able to wait, no reason to pay top dollar for brand new :-)

Skyrim is an awesome game by the way!

    Have fun in NY!

Thanks Derek – it’s good to hear that from a connoisseur of video games =). I don’t remember the last time we paid full price for a video game. Even if they’re recently released, Amazon usually has decent prices on them.
