Hello lovely readers! Another week down, one more week in July to go! It’s a little sad that my birthday month (and many of yours, apparently!) has gone by so quickly, but I am totally counting down the days until the end of summer.

R was talking to a coworker who commented that she thinks the hottest weather has yet to come. I sincerely hope she’s wrong!

I have a lot to be grateful for yet again this week, so let’s get to it!

being grateful

My Grandma

What’s a “being grateful” post without mention of my grandma? Well, for the past few months, she’s been absent since we moved. But she more than made up for that this past week.

Besides buying dinner twice when we were visiting with her, she basically purchased a week’s worth of groceries for us, and treated us to dinner.

being grateful
Pretty rainbow after the rain!

To be clear, this was not in our plans at all, but I have written before about how my grandma loves to spoil everyone. It’s in her blood. She gave us gas money on our drive back, and since R wanted to use his card instead, we pocketed the cash. My plan was to treat her to dinner, but I guess I should have known better.

So the good news is, my grandma is an awesome guest, but I wanted to give back. She purchased some extra stuff while she was here, and couldn’t fit it all into the travel bag she took with her, so I’m taking it upon myself to ship the leftovers back to her.

She told us not to worry and leave her things with us for the next time she visits, but she was also talking about getting a box and shipping it back to herself. I have a funny feeling she just doesn’t want us to pay for it.

I’m also very grateful her flight went smoothly. Sunday through Tuesday it rained here, and she was afraid her flight would be delayed. Wednesday was sunny though, and they actually landed early! I’m sure she’s relieved to be back home.

Our Budget

You may remember that I decided to switch our method of budgeting at the beginning of the month, and I am pleased to report it went rather well. July will likely be our best month, at least since we’ve moved here. (On that note, I cannot believe it’s been three months already!)

That’s also in part, again, thanks to the generosity of friends and family. I didn’t actually pay for much on my “vacation,” which I am seriously thankful for. So our food and restaurant budget looks pretty good right now. We do have one more week left, so we might have to take another grocery trip, but we were able to save a decent amount because of my grandma’s kindness.

Truthfully, it’s just nice to finally have a month where things went okay (*knocks on wood*). I have a feeling August is going to be very harsh, so the reprieve is welcome! So welcome, I’ve been entertaining thoughts of getting a haircut. I’m really overdue on one – I think I went once sometime last year?

My Car Window?

This one is pretty funny. My passenger window has never worked on my car – I purchased it with that knowledge. I know that seems silly to some, but I’m not a huge fan of rolling the windows down in the first place (my hair gets terribly knotted), and I get cold easily, so I don’t use the A/C much.

being grateful
My reaction

I haven’t tried the window in a while. Sometimes I pressed down on the switch just to see, but I can’t remember the last time I did.

Well, on Sunday, when we were leaving my parents’ house, a few annoying gnats found their way into my car. As we were furiously trying to fend them off, I decided to try to roll my window down.

Lo and behold, it worked! Crazy I tell you!

I was actually yelling, “What?!?” in disbelief, and it took a while for R to notice what I was talking about (he was in the middle of a dangerous fight with one particular feisty gnat). I still couldn’t believe it, and had to open the window once we got home to confirm it was for real.

I’m still afraid to open it and leave it open, though. Being that none of us knew why it was stuck in the first place, it could potentially get stuck again.

Kitties!

being gratefulLastly, I was just grateful to get home. After spending ten days away from R and the cats (and the apartment), I was beyond happy to be able to go to sleep in my own bed. Obviously, sleeping at my grandma’s house and my parents’ house was fine, considering I’m familiar with both houses (I don’t sleep well in hotels!), but nothing beats being home.

I missed the crazy antics of my cats while I was away, and I haven’t shared a picture of them in a while, so here’s your obligatory cat cuteness for the day!

Speaking of, I know there’s a few of you out there who are pet parents out there. We should totally get a PF pet lover group going somehow. I love seeing everyone’s pictures! (Plug – check out Frugalwoods for adorable greyhound pics..and other PF stuff, of course. It’s my favorite new blog.)

What are you being grateful for this week? Do you have any pets? Have you experienced your car fixing itself randomly?

I’ve definitely never experienced my car miraculously fixing itself, that’s friggin awesome! I do have pets, you might have noticed my beautiful little pup in a recent post on my blog. As far as what I’m thankful fro this week, my business is going incredibly well and I’m starting to see my wedding coming in the near future. I’m so excited! Ohh, and your grandma rocks!

That’s awesome! I can’t wait for wedding posts =). Your puppy is quite the beauty, especially with those eyes! I want a dog so badly, but our apartment complex charges a hefty fee for pets, and we already paid around $400 for the cats.

I wish my car would fix itself! I still haven’t fixed my window yet and it’s going to be $250, plus I have the eye doc, dentist and car taxes and registration coming up too :(

I was too scared to ever get a quote on fixing the window. I figured it would be way more than I was willing to spend! Yikes, that is a lot coming up. Is there any way to space the eye doctor and dentist appointments out a bit? Hopefully you won’t need anything done besides the check-up!

My car healed itself once, too! The back windows stopped working but one day they began working again! They worked for months up until the car was totaled (and maybe beyond)!

Oh my goodness, thank you for the shout out! I was reading along like hey, loving this post & grandma, KITTEH pictures, gnats….and then I saw my name and was like WAIT, WOW, THAT’S ME! Clearly I am 10 years old. But seriously, thank you! I really appreciate your kind words! And yes, we definitely need a pet lovers group! Maybe #frugalpets?

P.S. this made me laugh aloud: “he was in the middle of a dangerous fight with one particular feisty gnat”

I really hope there’s not too much more heat ahead. I’m just getting ready for birthday mode over here. The boyfriend is Tuesday, then mom on Friday, then me the following Tuesday. 28 isn’t exactly a milestone, but I definitely have a lot to celebrate from 27.

I wish I could have another cat or dog but with both our schedules and a lot of traveling it wouldn’t be right to have any at this stage in our lives. Your cats are so cute! I miss having one around :( Can I call you whenever I have something wrong with my car and you can heal it for me? Keeping my fingers crossed that your passenger window will continue to work.

Aw =(. Hopefully someday soon? My cats honestly don’t do much during the day. They had gotten used to both of us working and being gone, I guess, so they mostly lay around. They’re more active at night…right before we go to bed, of course.

Hah, I wish I had magical car healing powers, trust me!

I would so be up for a PF pet lover group! I have cats too – they do the funniest things! I totally understand missing being away from them. Sometimes I think my cats are really annoying, but then I’m away from them visiting my parents for a day or 2, and I start really missing them. My parents’ cats can’t compare ;)

Good job on a good financial month! I’ll cross my fingers August is kind to you as well :)

I really like my hair long, but when I start putting it up everyday because it’s getting in the way, I know I’m due for a trim! I mostly don’t like spending $30+ to get a few inches off, so I’d rather wait to actually make it worth it.

Your grandmother sounds like an amazing lady! Both of my grandmothers are the same way and I could never repay them for all the help they’ve given me since I was born. They’ve helped me put gas in my car, put food in my fridge and assisted me with bills when I’ve had a hard month, all without wanting anything in return (believe me I’ve tried every method and gotten yelled at for it too). I try and give others the same kindness they’ve given me and I hope to be in a position someday soon in which I can offer the same to a friend or family member.

That’s exactly how my grandma is. She has helped out all her daughters and her grandkids, and I don’t think there’s any way we can repay her at this point. She just appreciates phone calls =). I hope to at least be able to give back to my parents one day. I’d love to take a family vacation and pay for everything.

Great to hear about your car window! I have never had things on my car fix without having to pay : ( Maybe one day. It’s also nice when grandparents like to spoil people. I hope I’m like that one day, as hard as it is right now to accept anything like that (I’m like you – I want to give back). We should totally start a pet-owner pf type thing. We have our new cat and kitten and it’s been great so far. I am somewhat allergic to cats so taking precautions is a bit of a pain (we don’t let them in our room, my wife has to clean the cat box, we have to brush the bigger cat often, the vacuum is our best friend, etc.) but I think it’s worth it as my wife is a big cat lover and I like to have them around as well. Hope you have a great weekend!

I didn’t know you were allergic to cats! I’m glad you’re able to enjoy their company regardless. If I were allergic to them I’d be devastated as I’m such a big animal lover. I would love it if they shed less, though. There’s always cat hair everywhere, so yes, vacuums are a pet owners best friend!

We went to an out-of-town family wedding. My parents were really nice and paid for our hotel room and a few meals as well. It wasn’t going to be super expensive but we really appreciated their generosity. We are always looking for ways to give back. However most of the time they refuse!

Your grandma is pretty cool! As for your window, I have a similar problem with my passenger side window…I have a problem rolling it down from the driver’s side control panel, but rolling it up is not a problem. Using the buttons on the passenger side works too…probably some electrical thing…but not really worth it to fix it. I like rolling down the windows too.
