Hi everyone! I hope you all had an excellent week. This one went by particularly fast for us. I’ve been doing the usual blogging things on top of some freelance writing, and I can’t believe how the time flies! It sure beats being in an office, watching the clock tick away. I even woke up earlier than usual one day, and didn’t feel any more productive. Crazy!

I think I need to take a look into some time management applications, or I need to set timers or myself for different tasks. I’ve never worked from home before, and even though I thought I had some good discipline, I’m clearly lacking in certain instances.

being grateful

The biggest thing that had me being grateful this week was finally receiving my laptop on Tuesday. It is ten times faster than my computer (which is kind of sad, and goes to show you how outdated it is!), and has made blogging a lot easier. I’ve been enjoying being able to move around the apartment. Being sentenced to my desk in one position wasn’t really fun. We’re also thinking of rearranging furniture around a bit, as my desk is facing the wall, away from everything. I’d rather be facing a window!

I almost had a little fiasco with the DMV, which I was half expecting. Whenever you go there, something always seems to go wrong, or you don’t have the correct documentation.

being gratefulWell, I triple checked all the documentation needed, and I made sure we had everything. Turns out, the problem was my name. Yep. My middle name was not written out on any documents I had, and apparently NC requires you to have your full name displayed on your license. Since they had no proof of my middle name, they couldn’t do anything for me.

So R went on to take the road sign and vision tests, and got his picture taken for his license, while I sat there annoyed for a bit. It was the silliest technicality in my mind, and I had no way of knowing this would happen. My NY license just has my middle initial, and considering NY is pretty strict on things, I didn’t anticipate having any issues.

There is a good outcome, though. After hours of searching, we finally found my birth certificate, which is good enough proof for them. So I am hoping to go back later today and get everything wrapped up. Thankfully, the office is only about five minutes away so it’s not a huge deal.

Also on another good note, I finally changed my address on my car insurance policy, and my premium went down to $184. Wow. I was not expecting that much of a drop. This means that R and I are paying less combined than he was paying in NY. I’d call that a win! I can also pay it in one shot and not have to worry about it for another six months.

I finally decided on a bank, after making a chart of all the details I needed to know to. I actually ended up looking at the banks that received the highest customer service being gratefulsatisfaction. Turns out, one of them is around the corner, and has Saturday hours. All good things to me! I’ll be bringing all the crap I took to the DMV with me just in case they’re stricter, but let’s hope not.

And lastly, I have thoroughly enjoyed having my cats back here. Something was definitely missing without them, even though the little one has a habit of being a terror at sporadic times during the day and night =). I’m just happy that it seems they have adjusted well.

They were spoiled at my parents house with treats and the opportunity to go outside and enjoy the sun, but it doesn’t seem like they miss it much. It’s as though they haven’t skipped a beat, and moved in with us originally. Strange how that happens. 90% of our furniture made the move, so I think they were comforted by familiar surroundings. It probably helps that I am home with them, too.

I am looking forward to next week, as my parents should be coming here to visit! R also received the news that he will be off for Memorial Day, which he wasn’t expecting. His days off last year comprised of Thanksgiving and Christmas, and he worked half days for other holidays. We’re not sure if we’ll be visiting my parents for an extended weekend or not – it depends on how busy it will get by them. Unfortunately, they live in an area that is very prone to tourism, and we don’t want to hit any traffic.

Like many others, I simply can’t believe we are already halfway through May. A month has officially passed since we moved into our apartment! I’m also happy to report that I’ve had a few writing gigs so I’m not going completely broke =). Expenses this month will look a bit high due to my laptop, but it’s something I’ve been saving up for, and I’m really happy with my purchase.

What are you grateful for this week? Have you made any big purchases recently?

Wow that’s sweet about your car insurance. I love surprises like that. What a nightmare about the DMV though, yikes.

Your cats are awesome, great pics! I used to have 2 cats and I miss them. I may get a cat later on this year if my life gets less crazy. ;)

Yes, it was pretty awesome! The DMV could have been worse; at least it’s only about five minutes away. I would have been a lot more upset if we were wasting more time getting there.

Aw, you should! Here’s to hoping for less craziness!

Congrats on the writing gigs and also the drop in insurance! Glad the kitties are back with you too and settling in! Right now I’m glad that heat has broken and it’s back in the 70’s!! I’ll be even more grateful when the Air BnB family next door leaves…hopefully soon!

Thanks! I’m glad it’s not so hot there anymore. It’s actually been pretty cold here, too. We went for a walk yesterday and I was still chilly with my hoodie on. Very strange weather! Haha, I hope the family leaves soon for your sake as well =).

Congrats on getting your laptop! I could definitely not write in one place all the time. I need a change of scenery for my creative juices to flow. I am thankful for finalizing the cover of my new book this week. It is exciting to see it start to take form.

Thanks! Once I get my library card I’ll probably be making a few trips over there on “serious workload” days, where I just want to get everything done. I miss having that kind of environment! That’s so exciting about your book!

glad to hear everything is going well- and that you finally got the laptop! I totally get ya on the time management. I like using the pomodoro method to work for 25 min increments- I use the website [[http://tomato-timer.com/#]] to time myself! I find I get a lot more done when I have intervals of working :)

I had looked up apps on my phone and I saw that one. I think I remember you mentioning it on your blog! I will likely be trying it some time this week to see if it helps.

Glad you have your laptop! And the kitties!!! One looks like my family cat, which went missing. :( I have also been bad at timing my freelance work, and taking longer than it should considering the rate of pay. I realize I have to time my work per hour, to really focus and make sure I am not spending more than 1.5 hours/2 hours on posts. Having a timer has helped! Good luck!

I’m sorry he still hasn’t come back yet =(. I have been strongly considering setting a timer to tell myself to just focus for either 20-30 minutes at a time, distraction free. I’ve had the same issue with taking way too long on a single post, because I’m trying to multitask. I’m also not 100% used to writing for others yet, so getting into a different voice and frame of mind doesn’t come as naturally as writing for myself.

New laptops are the best! My wife just got one a few weeks ago when her’s broke. I’m not impressed with Windows 8 and I’m dreading making the switch, but I started to look into how to customize it a bit more and I think I’m ready for it (whenever my laptop ends up breaking, that is). Hope you had a great weekend!

I can’t get used to Windows 8, either. I don’t have much experience with it, but I wasn’t happy to see that they weren’t offering Windows 7 on laptops any more. I ended up with a Mac, though, so I can’t speak to it!

Congrats on the writing gigs! Wow the DMV sounds like more of a pain there than here. Pretty awesome that you’re saving a bunch of money on car insurance. Glad to hear R has Memorial Day off…I’m so looking forward to a 3 day weekend.

Thanks! Yeah, I was not expecting so much of a hassle at the DMV. With my name, of all things! The car insurance savings is probably our biggest win so far, besides rent. Memorial Day is always welcome as it’s usually been a while since most people have had off! I used to love the string of holidays in the fall/winter.

Glad you are happy with your new laptop! DMVs are always a pain in my opinion. How frustrating. Hope things look up from here :)

Thanks! We shall see, as I went back on Saturday but the wait was too long. I wasn’t going to sit there for 40 minutes just in case they could get to me. I’ll probably be going back today or tomorrow. Then we will have to go back to register the cars…ugh!

Yay for no more issues with getting your new laptop! Now I want a new one even more (can I just put that on my wedding registry?). And of course, yay for your “family” being back together. My two cats adjusted to our move instantly too, which was a pleasant surprise. I only moved in-town, but I didn’t expect the cats to warm up to R as quickly as they did, since I’ve/they’ve never lived with a man before.

Hey, why not, I would totally put whatever I wanted on my registry!

Considering cats hate change so much, I was very surprised that they settled in so quickly. It took them a bit to adjust to my parents house, so I wasn’t expecting it. Our older cat had lived with my parents and I before R and I moved in together, and it took her a bit to get used to our apartment. I do feel bad that they’ve been dragged around so much :/.

Congrats on the writing gigs. Sounds like things are working out for you on that front. I can’t believe about the DMV issue. I don’t have my middle name on my license just the initial like you said. NJ is pretty strict too so I don’t know why that is an issue in NC. I do have my full name on my passport so that’s always good to have.

It’s always nice to save money especially on car insurance.

Yeah, they asked about a passport, but unfortunately, I don’t have one! I’m just glad I found my birth certificate as we were looking for over an hour. I’ll be keeping that safe now!

Too bad about the whole DMV thing. That must have been really frustrating!

I also want to get a fast notebook (thinbook), but I’ve been putting it off due to the cost. Our current laptop is a monster at like 8 pounds – not very fun to lug around.

That orange cat is such a cutie!!

It was, but thankfully I got it taken care of today! Well, the first part…I’ll have to go back to register and title the car here.

My last laptop was around 6lbs, and it certainly wasn’t the greatest to carry around campus. I can’t believe how light this one is! Hopefully costs will go down as newer models come out. You could look into refurbished as well!

      Thank you =).
